The Brutal Winter of 2026 in Western New York

The frozen shoreline and open waters of Lake Ontario became one of the defining images of the season. Broad fields of ice extended toward the horizon, broken by dark seams, wind-swept textures, and patches of exposed water. In places, the ice appeared rough and fractured; elsewhere, it formed a nearly continuous white sheet.

A small lighthouse, surrounded by ice and snow, stood as a vivid focal point against the frozen lake. Its red roof contrasted with the stark winter landscape, while heavy ice buildup along the shoreline showed the force of wind, waves, and repeated freezing.
